After reading the article about St. Clair County treating child court cases with special treatment, I think the creation of the Children's Justice Division by State's Attorney Brendan Kelly and Assistant State's Attorney Anna Young is just what many kids need. The division will handle child support matters, juvenile abuse and neglect cases, juvenile delinquency, truancy and adult criminal cases where children are victims.
Treating children who get into trouble and commit crimes like adults is not always the best answer. Children need that second chance to be able to turn their lives around and try to make up for their mistakes.
Although it is somewhat shocking that something like this has not already been created, it's a good thing that it's finally been brought into the public eye. Many people are quick to judge kids who tend to get themselves into trouble, and some think they don't deserve that second chance that could really turn their lives around.
