Let's hope Obama proves himself

Published: December 6, 2012

I am getting tired of reading all the letters complaining that President Obama got re-elected.

Maybe if the Republicans would have chosen someone who supported the middle class rather than the rich, they might have won. I admit I could not decide who was the lesser of two evils. I also admit: I didn't want either to be my president.

I realize it is hard for the oh so very rich to identify with people living only on Social Security, or how about those with no jobs, their savings gone, their homes lost, through no fault of their own. (And are especially bitter because their jobs went overseas so that the rich could get richer.) When you have so much money that the annual unearned income (interest, dividends and capital gains) is more than the average person earns in his lifetime -- and to put salt on the wound knowing those dividends and capital gains are being taxed at the low rate of only 15 percent -- how can you identify with a family who struggles to earn $40,000 (maybe less) a year?

I guess, to use another cliche, it's better to vote for the devil you know than the devil you don't know.

If the Republicans want to win next time, they need to find a better candidate. I only hope Obama proves to everyone (including me) that he was the right choice.
