Cougars drop dual to South Dakokta State

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling Cougars won five of nine contested matches, including four of the last five but dropped a 27-16 decision at South Dakota State.

SIUE coach David Ray said the Cougars were in control of the match but let the Jacks gain too much momentum too quickly.

"They found a way to win. We did not close the deal," said Ray.

Josh Wood provided the biggest win of the night for the Cougars with a major decision over SDSU's Joe Skow 12-0 at 197 pounds.

Jake Residori collected a sudden victory 5-3 win over Joe Brewster at 165 pounds.

Patrick Myers became SIUE's first 10-match winner with a 9-6 victory over Brance Simms at 133 pounds. Myers, the reigning Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week, improved his season record to 10-1.

SIUE also picked up wins from Deshoun White at 174 pounds and David Devine at 285.

Three South Dakota State pins and a forfeit gave South Dakota State, now 3-5, the edge. SIUE fell to 1-5.

Next up for the Cougars is the Purdue Dual on Dec. 16. SIUE travels to Bloomington, Ind., to face Purdue and Iowa Western.

Meyers earns conference honors

EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Patrick Myers has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week.

The selection is made by the league office.

Myers, a 133-pounder, went 4-1 in dual action in earning the honor, including a win over Gardner-Webb's Robbie Golde as SIUE won its first-ever SoCon dual. The Cougars are in their first season as full-fledged members of the league.

The Cresson, Pa., native went 1-1 at the Iowa Duals in Iowa City, Iowa, on Nov. 24. He opened his day with a loss against No. 3 Tony Ramos of the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes before rebounding with a 12-3 major decision over Cornell (Iowa)'s Ben Rosen. Myers also pinned Iowa Central's Tyler Reiste in an exhibition match that didn't count toward his season stats.

At the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind., Myers went 3-0. Myers picked up a 17-2 technical fall over Quin Murphy of host Indiana and added a 4-3 decision over Bucknell's Paul Petrov.

Myers, a redshirt sophomore, also notched a 12-7 decision over Golde as the Cougars earned their first SoCon win, 24-21 over the Runnin' Bulldogs, despite forfeiting two weight classes.

The award is an historic one for SIUE, as it is the first for the program as a member of the SoCon.
