Alton resident Michael S. Burgund was convicted by a Madison County jury Monday evening of predatory criminal sexual assault.
Burgund, 30, was charged in April 2011 with six counts of predatory criminal sexual assault after he walked into the Alton Police Department and volunteered that he sexually assaulted two girls, ages 2 and 3, beginning in June 2008.
The jury deliberated about six hours before it returned the guilty verdict in the Class X felony case.
Burgund is expected to be sentenced in six to eight weeks, according to Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons. Usually a Class X felony carries a penalty of 6-30 years in prison. But, because of the severity of the crimes, prosecutors filed notice that they plan to seek a sentence of life in prison.
While he awaits his sentence, Burgund is being held in the Madison County Jail.
