Water from low Mississippi leaving bad taste in the mouth of area residents

Published: December 11, 2012

Illinois American Water is addressing customer complaints Tuesday about drinking water having an odd odor and taste.

Spokeswoman for Illinois American Water Karen Cotton said the unusual odor and taste is due to the low levels of the Mississippi River changing the aesthetics of the water.

Cotton said the water is safe to drink and meets all EPA health standards.

Engineers are working to mitigate the taste and smell issues through the treatment process, Cotton said.

Until the issues can be resolved, Cotton advised residents to place water in a container in the refrigerator for one hour to "help mitigate the aesthetics" of the water.
