KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Four Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer players have been named to the Midwest All-Region teams announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Sophomores Matt Polster (Las Vegas) and Christian Volesky (Henderson, Nev.) were each named to the first team. Senior Ryan Bauer (O'Fallon, Mo.) was named to the second team while fellow senior Peter Kelly (St. Louis) was named to the third team.
"Congratulations to these four young men on their NSCAA All-Midwest Region recognition," SIUE coach Kevin Kalish said. "All four of these players played an instrumental role in our team's overall success this past season and are very deserving of the honor."
Polster started 19 of SIUE's 20 games during the year, helping anchor a defense that finished with a goals against average of just 0.84. Polster recorded five shots during the season.
Volesky led SIUE and the Missouri Valley Conference with nine goals during the season. He also led the Cougars with 48 total shots and 23 shots on goal.
Bauer started all 20 games in the midfield for the Cougars, leading the team with five assists during the season.
Kelly finished second to Volesky in scoring with 13 points. He notched five goals and added three assists. Kelly tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals during the season.
The four selections for SIUE is the most of any team in the region. Oakland also had four players recognized.
"The recognition is a testament to not only these four student-athletes but also their teammates," Kalish added. "This is another example of the overall quality of players that are in our program wearing the Cougar jersey."
The Cougars finished with a 13-7 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the MVC, which was good for second. SIUE fell in the finals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament to Creighton, which reached the 2012 College Cup before falling in the national semifinals to eventual champion Indiana.
