An Edwardsville School District employee found dead behind the high school Wednesday appeared to have died from natural causes, according to an autopsy.

Robert L. Buchwald, 58, of Edwardsville, was found dead Wednesday afternoon in a school district van. The maintenance department worker was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m., according to a news release from Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn.

An autopsy conducted Thursday morning revealed an enlarged heart, but no definitive cause of death will be prescribed until after routine toxicology testing and microscopic studies. There was no evidence of injury, foul play or criminal activity, Nonn said.

"There is no evidence suggestive that the death is anything other than natural causes at this time," Nonn stated.

The Edwardsville Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Funeral arrangements for Buchwald are pending.
