Culture of violence is part of the problem

Published: December 17, 2012

As the story of the tragedy in Connecticut unfolded, the cries for gun control rose to new heights. I agree when it comes to assault weapons. Nobody except the police need them.

However, we seem to ignore the role the entertainment industry plays in these tragedies. Remember, the individuals involved were somehow mentally impaired. Do we need the multitude of violent, cruel, sadistic and murderous video games? Hollywood movies are no better and in some cases worse. The music industry is just as bad with all the violent rap music. Do we really need these deranged people seeing this type of violent entertainment?

Our culture has changed and not for the better. We bow to political correctness when it comes to Christian religious beliefs and Christmas displays, afraid we'll hurt somebody's feelings. In my day it was Easter and Christmas break on school signs, not spring and winter break.

If we want to stop this senseless violence perhaps we should revive love, respect of others and responsiblity for one's action.
