A 23-year-old New Baden man is charged with aggravated battery of a 18-month-old boy, a class X felony, by Clinton County State's Attorney's Office.
James M. Caskey allegedly abused his girlfriend's child, according to Clinton County Sheriff Mike Kreke.
Police and EMS were called Sunday to a home on Mary Irene Road in New Baden for a baby who had fallen out of his crib.
"The baby was conscious and breathing but not responsive," Kreke said.
Caskey's 4-year-old son was also present, but was not injured.
The 18-month-old was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese. Hospital staff contacted the sheriff's department to report a possible abuse case.
"The injuries on the baby weren't consistent with the story being told," Kreke said.
The 18-month-old sustained injuries, Kreke said, "to the head area and to the lower extremities of the body."
The baby, who was transported from St. Joseph's to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, remains hospitalized. "He doesn't appear to have life threatening injuries at this point," Kreke said.
Caskey remains in the Clinton County Jail. His bail was set at $250,000 with a condition he has no contact with minor children. He is set to appear in court on Jan. 9. If convicted, Caskey faces six to 30 years in prison.
The Clinton County Sheriff's Department was assisted by New Baden Police, Trenton Police, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and Sugar Creek Ambulance Service.
