Grizzlies re-sign two players

Published: December 23, 2012

— The Gateway Grizzlies have re-signed pitcher Zac Treece and infielder Alex Guthrie for the 2013 season, manager Phil Warren said.

Treece, a right-handed reliever from Hot Springs, AR, was named the Frontier League Rookie of the Year in 2012. The 6-3 200-pound 24-year-old went 2-1 with a team-best 1.21 ERA in 36 appearances (all relief). Treece struck out 54 batters and walked only 16 in 51 and two thirds innings. He finished second on the team in saves with four.

"Zac was absolutely dominant last season out of our bullpen," Warren commented. "We knew every time we put him in the game, he was going to get the job done. I'm excited to see what he does for an encore in 2013."

Guthrie, a first baseman/third baseman from Sunnyvale, CA, batted .256 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 30 games (82 at-bats) with the Grizzlies in 2012. The 6-1 195-pound 23-year-old recorded seven extra base hits.

"Alex was the youngest player on the team last year, but he still showed a lot of maturity and promise," Warren remarked. "He's a big kid with power and good defensive skills in the infield. He will be a key contributor in 2013."

The Grizzlies 2013 home opener is May 21 when the Grizzlies take on the Joliet Slammers at GCS Ballpark. Season and group tickets are on sale now. For more information call 618-337-3000.
