Glenn McCoy's cartoon contrasting President Obama's free stuff with Mitt Romney's more austere ideas struck a chord with our readers, who voted it the top toon of 2012.

In all, 227 readers voted either online or by phone (228 if you count the woman who called in and said that none of McCoy's cartoons should be published).

The second top vote-getter was the cartoon about St. Clair Mark Kern and the money-losing Mid-America Airport.

Third was the cartoon about the plan to shift teacher pension funding from the state to local taxpayers.
