Goodwin's career night highlights West win over Alton

Published: January 5, 2013

Senior Markkies Goodwin scored a career-high 24 points and senior Nick Van Osdale added 20 on Friday as the visiting Belleville West Maroons defeated Alton 65-52 in a Southwestern Conference game.

It was the sixth victory in seven games for the Maroons (10-3, 4-2 SWC).

Senior D.J. Owens also reached double figures with 12 points for the Maroons, who led 13-8 after one quarter, 28-19 at halftime and 51-31 after three quarters before Alton attempted a late comeback

"Alton made a little run and cut it to within six, but we did some nice things at the end to win the game by 13. We played pretty well," said Maroons coach Joe Muniz. "When they cut it to a two-possession game, momentum was on their side. They started making a lot of shots they weren't hitting before."

Van Osdale's layup put West back in control, and the Maroons then were able to close out the Redbirds (8-6, 3-3).

"I was happy with our guys and how under-control they were," Muniz said. "They didn't panic. It's a senior-laden ballclub and they played like seniors."

Senior Tyrome Parker had 18 points to lead Alton.

Goodwin, who was a second-team all-tournament pick last week at Centralia, finished 11-for-13 from the floor in his breakout performance.

"He's getting better every game," Muniz said. "This was a huge step for him. Our guards did a good job getting him the ball in places he could score. He's a presence inside. We can't rely on just Nick to score 20 to 30 points a game. It's a team effort."

East St. Louis 76, Granite City 45

Senior DeShawn Munson scored 23 points as the visiting Flyers beat the Granite City Warriors in an SWC game.

The Flyers, who won the Collinsville-Schnucks Holiday Classic last week, led 33-22 at halftime and then broke the game open by outscoring the Warriors 23-13 in the third quarter.

The Warriors were led by senior Omar Walker with 19 points. Senior Devin Narvaez had 12 points.

The Flyers also got 13 points from Demmus Jones.

Gibault 60, Mater Dei 59

The Central Cougars got a balanced scoring line -- Luke Jackson with 15 points, Jacob Timmermann with 14 points, Justin Becker with 11 and Austin Rickhoff with eight -- in beating the Columbia Eagles in a Cahokia Conference game.

Jacob Wessel led the Eagles with 10 points.
