A Madison County Sheriff's Department deputy shot to death an armed man during a confrontation late Friday night.
The names of the shooting victim and the deputy have not been released.
The Sheriff's Department called Illinois State Police to investigate the fatal shooting.
Sheriff Bob Hertz released this account of what happened:
Deputies received a call at 10:13 p.m. from a resident in the 7100 block of Illinois 140 in Fort Russell Township. The resident reported suspicious activity at his residence and requested deputies to respond to investigate.
Deputies arrived about four minutes later. After speaking to the complainant, deputies went to a home next door to further investigate. When approaching that residence, deputies were confronted by a man armed with a gun outside the residence.
"A confrontation with that armed man ensued and he was subsequently shot by a deputy sheriff," the statement read.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Other details about the shooting were not released.
