East St. Louis school leaders are trying to find a way to legally provide buses for students who lost their transportation due to the results of an audit.
According to state law, bus transportation is only required for students who live more than a mile and a half from school or who have to negotiate dangerous obstacles such as highways or railroad tracks on their way to class.
The financially strapped school district, which is under the control of the state of Illinois, learned after an investigation that more than 1,000 families may have been getting bus service that they shouldn't have been receiving, according to school leaders. Bus service was cut Monday causing anger amongst parents, many of whom told the district they never received notification letters about their bus transportation being cut.
