Swansea police are looking for four suspects who burglarized the Huck's convenience store in broad daylight.
Just after 9 a.m. Monday, two male and two female suspects, all wearing black clothes, came into the store at 4590 N. Illinois St. One of the suspects distracted the manager on duty at the automatic teller machine while two suspects broke into the office at the rear of the store. The fourth suspect served as a lookout during the theft, said Police Chief Mike Arnold.
The burglary seemed a "little odd," Arnold said, since the suspects seemed to know what the manager would be doing at that time.
"It wasn't a typical robbery or a typical theft," he said. Investigators are looking into if the theft was an inside job by a former or current Huck's employee.
It is unclear how the suspects gained entry to the manager's office. "Although the manager's door was locked prior to the incident, there were no signs the door was forced open by the suspects," Arnold said.
Arnold did not release the exact amount of money stolen, but he called it a large sum of money that included weekend sales.
Following the theft, all four suspects exited the store and entered a dark gray or green colored van, possibly with out-of-state plates, and were last seen traveling north on North Illinois Street, police said.
No weapons were displayed and no injuries were reported, Arnold said.
The manager and one store employee were working at Huck's when the robbery occurred. Police are not sure if any customers were in the store or pumping gas at the time of the theft.
Police did not release surveillance footage of the suspects because it was poor quality.
However, police released the following descriptions of the male suspects: a black man, about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall with a shaved or bald head, wearing a black pea coat and jeans ripped at the knees; and a black man wearing a black knit cap, black pea coat, light colored shirt and blue jeans.
Arnold said one of the females was described as a black woman about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds, wearing a short, burnt orange hairpiece, a black Harley-Davidson jacket with a white stripe down the arms and across the chest, blue jeans and boots. The second female was described as black, heavyset, with straight hair that was longer on the right than the left, and wearing glasses, a waist length leather coat, a white shirt with yellow trim at the neckline, blue jeans and knee high boots.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Swansea Police Department at 618-233-8114.
