Police in East St. Louis were investigating Saturday morning the first homicide of 2013 in the city.
A 31-year-old man died after he was shot in the stomach about 7 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of North 13th Street.
"When police arrived on scene, they located a man who appeared to have been shot in the stomach area," said Police Chief Michael Floore.
The victim, whose name was not released by police, was taken to St. Louis University Hospital where he died from his gunshot wound, Floore said.
Police have no suspects in the shooting, Floore said.
Floore said the victim appeared to be targeted. The victim was in the front yard of a house attending a barbecue when an unknown suspect walked up and shot him, Floore said.
Witnesses told police they saw the gunman run to 14th Street and jump into a vehicle. Police did not release a description of the vehicle.
