A bus driver from Godfrey will be remembered Thursday evening with a vigil outside the home where he was killed Sunday when the driver of a sport utility vehicle crashed into his house.
Marlin F. Bushnell, 73, was a bus driver for the Alton School District. His bus will be parked outside his home at 124 Saturn Drive during the vigil that begins at 5:30 p.m.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Bushnell was killed when neighbor Jacob Fickle was involved in a domestic dispute that got out of control. Fickle argued with a pair of family members in the 100 block of Mercury Drive. He took the keys to a family member’s vehicle and sped off after a fight, losing control and crashing into Bushnell’s home. After the crash, Fickle ran from the scene to a nearby bar, the Beer Barrel Pub at 7205 Montclaire Avenue.
Fickle has been charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of an accident that caused a death. He was also charged with two counts of domestic battery in connection with the original incident, and he was ticketed for driving with a revoked license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The case is still under investigation and more charges could be filed.
