Letter writer will be missed

Published: January 17, 2013

This newspaper lost a truly valuable resource for the letters section in the recent passing of Al Dorn from O'Fallon.

I did not know Dorn, although we both lived in O'Fallon for a time. We never met in person. But I knew him for his insightful and thoughtful contributions to those who still read. Even though we were political opposites we exchanged e-mails on everything from cars to presidents. I will miss him.

Ironically, his last letter to the BND was published posthumously, about a week after his obituary. Yet as if from beyond the grave, he was still being thoughtful and trying to help others by thanking his caregivers at Memorial and Barnes hospitals. How gracious. I can only hope that I can somehow find a way to do half as well when my time comes. I am sure he will be missed by all who knew him.
