East St. Louis grad Howard wins NJCAA honor

Joymesia Howard, a graduate of East St. Louis High School, has been named as the NJCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 25.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two wins last week fo Central Arizona College.

The 6-foot, 2-inch Howard helped the No. 4-ranked Vaqueras extended their winning streak to 12 games with her efficient shooting and domination of the boards.

Howard was 12-for-16 from the field with 26 points and 10 rebounds in an 84-68 victory over Eastern Arizona College.

In a 65-60 win over Cochise (Ariz.) College, the freshman scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

For the season, Howard is averaging 15.3 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. She's also blocked 34 shots.

Howard is shooting 55.3 percent (126 of 228) from the field.

Howard averaged 15 1/2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last season for the Flyerettes.

The Vaqueras are 17-1 overall with their lone loss being a 66-63 decision against No. 3 Trinity Valley College on Nov. 17.
