Caseyville baby severely burned in fire remains hospitalized

Published: January 18, 2013

A 2-month-old baby who was severely burned in a mobile home fire last week in Caseyville remains hospitalized.

The baby, identified as Jayla Hopson, sustained burns over 10 to 12 percent of her body in a fire Jan. 11 at a mobile home in the 100 block of Southern Drive. The fire was believed to have been ignited when the child's grandmother, who was in a bed with the baby, lit a cigarette near an oxygen tank.

Hopson was taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. She was discharged from that hospital Sunday and transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati.

The baby is in stable condition, said a representative for the hospital.

Jayla's mother Laura Tucker said in a statement that her mom is "absolutely devastated over what happened."
