Madison County man dies after being struck by tractor

Published: January 19, 2013

An 82-year-old man died Saturday as a result of a "tractor mishap," according to Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn.

Nonn said Paul W. Fulkrod, of unincorporated Bethalto, died as a result of blunt chest trauma.

Paul Fulkrod was clearing brush with his son James Fulkrod at their property in the 8000 block of Bethalto Road. Paul Fulkrod was towing downed brushed away from the cleared area with a tractor.

James Fulkrod, while working with the chain saw separately from his father, observed the tractor rolling backwards with his father running alongside, apparently in an attempt to return to the operator's seat and gain control of it. The tractor ran over Paul Fulkrod.

The deceased received emergency treatment at the scene by the Dorsey Volunteer Fire Department, and he was transported to Alton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 p.m. Saturday.

Nonn said routine toxicology testing will be performed; however, there is no suspicion of alcohol or drugs playing a role in this incident, which is also being investigated by the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Funeral arrangements for Paul Fulkrod are pending with Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River.
