Police catch fleeing motorist in Columbia after wild chase

Police on Monday evening finally caught up on Illinois 3 in Columbia with a fleeing motorist who twice crossed the Mississippi River in an effort to get away.

According to police reports, the pursuit started at about 8 p.m. on Interstate 255 in Cahokia and traveled over the Jefferson Barracks Bridge into South County. The driver then turned around, fled back into Illinois and exited the interstate on Illinois 3, where the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.

Police have not revealed why the driver initially caught their attention or the driver's identity. But police said no one was hurt in the effort to catch the fleeing motorist.
