A 51-year-old Granite City man was charged Tuesday with aggravated battery in connection with hitting a man who uses a wheelchair.

Ecker L. Matthews of 5445 Maryville Road hit a man he lives with Monday after telling the victim he couldn't live in the home any longer, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Department. The victim has a disability and uses a wheelchair, according to police.

The victim told police he was knocked out of his wheelchair during the attack, but was able to get back into it and get out of the house. The victim was not seriously injured as a result of the battery, police said.

Matthews was arrested at his home and transported to the Madison County Jail. His bail was set at $50,000 by Circuit Judge Richard Tognarelli.
