COLUMBIA — The Most Rev. Edward K. Braxton is scheduled to dedicate the new Immaculate Conception Church at 3 p.m. Sunday at 411 Palmer Road.
The dedication of the new church, with an estimated cost of $9 million, will follow a specific rite in which Braxton, the bishop of the Belleville Diocese, will consecrate the worship space as sacred for all time.
More than 20 clergy members from the diocese are scheduled to take part, including Bishop Stanley G. Schlarman, Immaculate Conception pastor the Monsignor Carl E. Scherrer, former pastors Monsignor Vince Haselhorst and the Rev. John Iffert, and current associate pastor the Rev. Gary Hogan.
The new church, which has seats for 850, is the result of a capital campaign that began in 1996. The cost of the new church covers major site work, the construction of entry roads, a lower level and a freestanding bell tower.
