Obama makes the right move

Published: January 24, 2013

Letter writer Dick White said President Obama and his father (deceased) are anti-colonialists, and that the president proved it by removing the bust of Winston Churchill from the White House.

Good for Obama. Does White realize that colonialists are raiders who seize the resources of nations and territories? Has he forgotten the United States had to fight the Revolutionary War to end England's rule over our colonies?

Europeans weren't the only raiders of colonies and territories. In the 1890s, the U.S. sent warships to Hawaii to protect the sugar corporations belonging to the descendants of the missionaries, who'd come years before with their holy Bibles.

Hawaii's ruler, Queen Liliuokalani, a very intelligent and fiercely patriotic woman, resented the influence the American planters and merchants had obtained over Hawaii. She said Hawaii was for the Hawaiians. Unfortunately for her, the American warships came to protect the interests of the missionaries' descendants, and forced her to give up her reign.

Since the president was born in Hawaii, I would have preferred he replaced Churchill's bust with one of Queen Liliuokalani, who also wrote the popular song, "Aloha Oe."

Last, did White call Obama a socialist because Obama believes everybody should have the right to prosperity, and not just the wealthy? If so, I must be a socialist. Does White consider Obama wrong because he's anti-colonialism? Then I'm wrong because I'm also against people raiding other peoples' resources.
