A Belleville man was killed Thursday after his car ran into a ditch in Mascoutah Township.

Devon Elbe, 23, was driving eastbound on Illinois 177 about 847 feet west of High Banks Road at 12:31 a.m. Thursday when his car ran off the roadway to the right, according to the Illinois State Police.

Elbe then tried to get back on the road, but overcorrected and struck a ditch on the left side of the road, police said. His car then overturned and rolled multiple times, and he was thrown from the vehicle. Elbe was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

He was pronounced dead at 1:04 a.m. by the St. Clair County Coroner's office. Police said there were no passengers in Elbe's car and no other vehicles involved in the accident.
