Cardinals have reportedly signed Cedeno

Published: January 27, 2013

It appears that the Cardinals have followed through on their talks with former Cubs infielder Ronny Cedeno.

Multiple reports indicate that the player is telling people that he has signed with St. Louis. The Cardinals have declined to discuss the situation in effort not to distract from Stan Musial's funeral.

Cedeno hit .259 in 78 games last year with the Mets. He's a .247 career hitter with a .290 on base percentage in eight seasons with Chicago, Seattle, Pittsburgh and New York. He's 30 years old and doesn't really have much of an upside.

It seems the best the Cardinals can hope for is that Cedeno is a seldom used utility man. Because if he is forced into major duty by an injury to starting shortstop Rafael Furcal, the Cardinals are in real trouble.
