Scott never needed a savior

Published: January 28, 2013

I got a chuckle out of the cartoon with the airplane that had Scott AFB on it making sky writing. I think it said "thanks Jerry" as if Costello had single-handedly saved the base. I nearly came to Scott AFB back in 1954 but didn't. I left the military in 1974 after finishing my AF career. I was on the base five years.

Scott AFB has never been in danger of closing ever since the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) came here. It has since been upgraded to a Command and enlarged its reach. Since that time other military Commands have opened operations at Scott. I know, and I repeat, Scott AFB has never been in danger of closing but Jerry Costello made a career out of "saving Scott AFB."

What a hoot!
