Tavarez, Wong and Martinez head list of Cardinals spring invitees

Several top Cardinals prospects will fight for a chance to make the major league team in spring training.

Oscar Tavares, who made his spring debut last year when he was called over from minor league camp and issued a jersey that didn't even have his name on the back, will be in the big league camp from the start this year with an outside chance of making the St. Louis roster.

Kolten Wong, a second baseman and Tavares' teammate in Class AA Springfield last season, will also get an invitation to big league camp.

Pitching prospects Michael Wacha, who rushed through the Cardinals farm system last season after being taken as the club's top draft choice in 2012, has received an invitation to camp as has highly rated prospect Carlos Martinez. After starting 2012 at High A Palm Beach, Martinez finished strong in Class AA Springfield. Class AAA Memphis starter John Gast has also received an invitation to camp.

Other non-roster invitees to Cardinals spring training include veteran catchers J.R. Towles and Rob Johnson and veteran outfielder Justin Christian who has seen a little bit of big league playing time with the Yankees and Giants;
