All lanes and ramps of Interstate 64 will be closed in both directions downtown between Hampton Avenue and Forest Park Parkway beginning Friday.
The interstate will close at 8 p.m. and is expected to remain completely shut down in the area until about 3 p.m. Monday.
The interstate will be closed so the Taylor and Newstead bridges over I-64 can be demolished as part of a project to construct a new interchange at Tower Grove and Boyle and to replace four bridges over the interstate.
The ramps from McCausland/Skinker, Hampton and Kingshighway to eastbound I-64 and the ramps from Pine, Jefferson, Market and Grant to westbound I-64 will be closed during the work.
Westbound I-64 travelers should take the Forest Park Avenue exit (exit 38A) and follow Forest Park Avenue to Kingshighway. Turn left onto Kingshighway to make it back to the interstate.
Eastbound I-64 drivers should take the Hampton Avenue exit (exit 34B), turn right on Hampton and follow it to eastbound Interstate 44. Drivers can then take I-44 to the Poplar Street Bridge.
After I-64 is reopened, only three lanes will be available in each direction as construction continues until November. Commuters are urged to use alternate routes if possible.
The closure may be delayed due to temperatures or significant rain or snow.
