America's promise is for all, rich and poor

Published: January 31, 2013

I don't understand all the voices that say President Obama is ruining our country when many more know it was the last Republican president who rode this country into the ditch and left it bankrupt.

I would like to ask exactly how do these people envision America? Do they want a country where only prominent high income individuals are part of the American dream? Do they want to see the elderly, disabled and low-income families eating out of garbage cans and struggling with health problems that are avoidable with good health care? And let's not talk about the homeless because they seem to not matter to them.

It seems I have written these letters for a lifetime and it makes me want to ask those who want to punish the less fortunate: What do you expect to happen to low-income families who cannot, for whatever reason, survive this capitalistic society? Are American citizens disposable because they are unable to attain the American dream?

I believe President Obama won a second term because he has a vision where all American citizens equally deserve the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Perhaps my civics teacher was wrong when I was taught the government was "of the people, by the people, and for the people." I guess the poor should be left out of that promise.
