Cahokia takes team honors at Carbondale wrestling regional

Staking a claim as one of the state's top Class 2A teams, the Cahokia Comanches had four individual champions and went on to post a narrow victory Saturday at the Class 2A Carbondale Regional.

Highly-touted senior David Frazier improved to 33-1 with a win in the 160-pound weight class to lead the way for the Comanches, who will advance seven wrestlers to the Mattoon Sectional on Feb. 8-9.

Dameon Adams (113), Leslie Williams (120) and Shelton Pippin also won titles for the Comanches, who finished with 152 points, 13 more than second-place Marion.

Herrin was third with 133 points.

East St. Louis finished a distant sixth with 109 points, but the Flyers advanced four wrestlers, including Antonio Moore, who took the title at 106.

Waterloo got a first place from Pat Bieber (182) and a third place from Denis Wilson, while Mascoutah advanced T.J. Stephenson (120), Kelton McDonnell (126) and Tom Graf (170).

Class 2A Mount Zion Regional

The Triad Knights won many of the battles, but lost the war as they settled for second at Mount Zion High School.

Taylorville won the team title with 153 points, 9 1/2 more than the Knights, which will advance eight individuals to the Mattoon Sectional.

Triad got titles from Cole Wysocki (120) and Ben Throm (170) and second-place efforts from Chris Bratten (113), Cole Witzig (145) and John McKinney (182).

Highland placed fifth with 114 points and was led by Tanner Farmer who was a champion at heavyweight.

Nick Czar won a title at 220 for Highland, while placing second for the Bulldogs were Mason Lee (138), Zach Bramstedt (160) and Shae Weber (195).

Class 1A Litchfield Sectional

It was a day of youth and experience for the Althoff Crusaders, who will advance six wrestlers onto the Vandalia Sectional on Feb. 8-9.

Senior Michael Harris won a title at 132 while freshman Jarrid Braunagel continued his exceptional season by claiming the 113-pound championship for Althoff, which finished with 105 points.

Litchfield won the title with 212 points.

Also advancing for the Crusaders were Jevon Hey (106), Cody Harris (126), Bret Silvestri (182) and Rodney Baker (285).

Class 1A Mount Carmel Regional

Heavyweight Dre Cannon and senior Kevin Roper were dominant in the upper weights as Carlyle will advance four wrestlers into the Vandalia Sectional following a solid effort at Mount Carmel High School.

Roper won a title at 220 while Cannon topped the field at 285. A third senior, Zach Zvonar (120) also was a champion for the Indians who also advanced Chris Maddox (160).

Class 1A West Frankfort Regional

Heavyweight Jon Lueth and 195-pounder Dylan Halley won titles to help spark Sparta to a fifth-place team finish at West Frankfort High School.

In all, six Sparta wrestlers will advance to the Vandalia Sectional on Feb. 8-9.

Murphysboro won the team title with 162 points.
