Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday a suspect dressed as a woman handed a note to a teller at Commerce Bank in Columbia demanding money, received it and fled.
Columbia Police Chief Joe Edwards said the note stated the robber had a gun. The teller gave her an undetermined amount of cash.
On Monday, police reported the suspect was a woman. But on Tuesday, police said they were not sure of the gender of the suspect, who was wearing a wig and red lipstick.
The robber was gone within about 90 seconds and fled through a side door into the Market Place grocery store. Commerce Bank is at 995 Columbia Center, off Illinois 3.
Edwards said Columbia Police and the FBI are investigating. Images of the robber were taken from the bank surveillance system.
Edwards asked anyone with information about the robbery to call his department at (618) 281-5151, the FBI at (618) 394-5630 or Crimestoppers at
(866) 371-8477. CrimeStoppers tips may be made anonymously and up to $1,000 is paid for information leading to a conviction.
