Edwardsville caps another unbeaten run through SWC

Published: February 8, 2013

The Edwardsville Tigers put the finishing touch on four years of perfection in the Southwestern Conference on Thursday with a 102-39 road victory over the Alton Redbirds in Godfrey.

The win is the 61st straight in SWC play for coach Lori Blade's squad, which improved to 14-0 in the conference and 27-0 overall.

Ranked second in the Class 4A state poll behind defending state champion (Chicago) Whitney Young, Edwardsville has not lost a conference game since dropping a 50-37 decision to Belleville West on Jan. 29, 2009.

The Tigers senior class will graduate having never lost a SWC game and finishes its prep career 56-0 in league play.

Edwardsville will return to Godfrey on Tuesday to take on the Redbirds in a first-round Class 4A regional game.

A victory would almost certainly mean a showdown with Springfield for the regional title on Feb 14.

The Senators are 24-3 and ranked sixth in Class 4A.
