Variety of scholarships available to local students

Now is the time for high school and college students to apply for scholarships available through local organizations and businesses.

The Southwestern Illinois College Foundation has more than 230 scholarships available for the fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters.

Several new scholarships will be awarded this fall, which are as follows:

* The Sgt. Jon Brough Scholarship -- awarded to a full-time, first-year Administration of Justice student;

* The Antoinette D. Blanton Memorial Award -- awarded to a part- or full-time student attending the East St. Louis Community College Center;

* The Midland States Bank Scholarship -- two additional scholarships: one to a resident of East St. Louis, Alorton, Centreville, Edgemont, Fairmont City, Washington Park, Lovejoy or Brooklyn and one to a resident of Freeburg or Smithton, first preference, or St. Clair County resident;

* The Dr. Valerie Thaxton Award -- awarded to a SWIC GED graduate;

* The Mrs. Tamarra Lane (Allen) Courtney Scholarship -- awarded to two students pursuing nursing careers;

* The International Police Association Region 57 Scholarship -- awarded to a student pursuing a degree or certificate in Administration of Justice.

Individuals should submit applications before March 1. Applications must be completed online at www.swic.edu/foundation. For more information, contact the Foundation office at 618-235-2700, ext. 5518.

Here's a rundown of other area scholarships up for grabs:

What: St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson will award a $500 scholarship.

Qualifications: A student must be a permanent Illinois resident; scholarship must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the State of Illinois; and student must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2013-2014 year.

Application: St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, 700 N. 5th Street in Belleville, or on the Internet at www.ilsheriff.org.

Deadline: March 15.

What: Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz will award a $500 scholarship.

Qualifications: A student must be a permanent Illinois resident; scholarship must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the State of Illinois; and student must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2013-2014 year.

Application: Madison County Sheriff's Department, 405 Randle Street in Edwardsville, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, or on the Internet at www.ilsheriff.org.

Deadline: March 15.

What: The Kohl's Department Stores Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program will award more than $425,000 in scholarships and prizes this year -- ranging from $50 Kohl's gift cards to $10,000 scholarships.

Qualifications: Students, ages 6 to 18 years old, who have made a positive impact on their communities are eligible.

Application: www.kohlskids.com.

Deadline: March 15.

What: First National Bank of St. Louis branch in Millstadt will award a $1,000 higher education grant to a college freshman.

Qualifications: The grant is intended for a full-time student only and will be awarded to a student living in the following townships: Millstadt, Stookey, Freeburg and Smithton.

Application: Millstadt branch, located at 3 East Washington St.

Deadline: April 2.

What: Four $1,000 scholarships are available through the Auxiliary of Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

Qualifications: Students must be enrolled in a hospital-related healthcare field, be legal residents of the State of Illinois and attend an accredited school.

Application: Information desk at Anderson Hospital, located at 6800 State Route 162 in Maryville.

Deadline: May 15. Winners will be announced in July.

Note: Anderson Hospital Physicians are also offering a $1,000 scholarship. More information about that scholarship will be available in the scholarship application packet.

What: The Madison-Bond Workforce Investment Board has announced the availability of scholarships. The scholarships are being offered through the Great River Workforce Development Corporation, Inc.

Qualifications: Students must be residents of either Madison or Bond counties entering Lewis & Clark Community College, Southwestern Illinois College or Kaskaskia College next fall.

Deadline: June 7.
