EAST ST. LOUIS — A woman's body was found early Tuesday on North 15th Street between Belmont and Ohio.
The woman was known by police to be a streetwalker, Police Chief Michael Floore said. Criminal records in St. Clair and Madison counties showed no arrests or charges other than traffic tickets under her name.
She was found shot and fully clothed, lying in the middle of the street at 7:07 a.m. Tuesday by a passer-by, Illinois State Police Capt. Jim Morrisey said. She had identification with her that showed she was 29, but police were not identifying her until they confirmed her identity and notified her family, Morrisey said.
The woman had several prior addresses in Collinsville and the most recent known address was in Bethalto, according to public records.
Morrisey said she had been shot within several hours of being discovered and had not been there overnight. He would not say whether she was shot where she was found.
The area was somewhat remote and wooded with just two houses and a business nearby.
Morrisey asked anyone with information about the homicide to call East St. Louis Police at 618-482-6700, state police at 618-346-3990 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477. CrimeStoppers pays up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
