Keep our students safe from gun violence

Published: February 12, 2013

The recent shooting tragedy in Newtown, Conn., has the nation outraged over the senseless killings. Could a stronger stance on gun control have prevented this outrageous act? Unfortunately the answer is no. When a criminal, sane or insane, is intent on doing harm he will find a way. That way might be a gun, a bomb, a car or even an airplane that is crashed into buildings.

Is the NRA's suggestion that all schools have an armed protector that unrealistic? After the terrorists killed almost 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001, did we stop flying airplanes? Of course not. Certainly changes were made and one of the changes included employing armed sky marshals.

If that worked for airplanes, then the safety of our children should require a similar response.
