A 78-year-old Madison County man was killed when his car rolled over him while he delivered Valentines to family members on Tuesday.
Richard J. Gonzales, of Godfrey, was dropping off a Valentine's Day card for his niece at 3304 Lincoln St. in Alton when he exited the car without putting it in park, according to a statement from Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn.
The car began to roll and the accident occurred when Gonzales attempted to enter the moving car.
Gonzales was found pinned under the vehicle after it came to a rest against a fence. The accident was reported at 2:27 p.m.
Family members told the coroner's office Gonzales visited his relatives each holiday with greeting cards and gifts. He was also a disaster volunteer with the American Red Cross and had volunteer with the group during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, at the Pentagon.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
