A 41-year-old Cottage Hills man faces meth charges after police said he set his house on fire Sunday night.

John L. Piper, of 1314 Seventh St. in Cottage Hills, was charged Wednesday with aggravated participation in methamphetamine manufacturing and unlawful disposal of methamphetamine manufacturing waste.

The Madison County Sheriff's office and Cottage Hills Fire Department responded to Piper's residence about 9:30 p.m. Sunday for a residential fire. The fire department extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Sheriff's Capt. T. Mike Dixon said evidence developed during the investigation revealed the fire was likely caused by a methamphetamine drug lab. Sheriff's investigators requested help from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall and the Illinois State Police Methamphetamine Response Team.

Investigators identified Piper as an occupant of the residence and learned he fled the home prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, police said.

Piper was located by investigators on Tuesday at a business in Wood River. He was questioned and detained at the Madison County Jail. Dixon said the investigation revealed Piper was producing methamphetamine at the residence when the fire started.

Piper is being held in lieu of $100,000.
