Published: February 14, 2013

An Edwardsville man is facing charges related to the death of a 27-year-old woman from Chicago.

The Cook County State's Attorney's office charged Michael D. Johnson, 28, of Edwardsville, with aggravated driving under the influence involving a death, aggravated fleeing and eluding and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Jennifer Mitchell was fatally struck by a car and a tractor-trailer Tuesday when she fell from the passenger side of her SUV as it was traveling on Interstate 94 southbound in Dolton, just south of Chicago.

Officials with Illinois State Police said it remains unclear if Mitchell was pushed or jumped, but Johnson was driving Mitchell's SUV when the vehicle crashed at an exit ramp. Johnson attempted to elude police and fled on foot, but was later apprehended by Illinois State Police District 15 troopers.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in bond court on Friday at the Cook County Sixth District Courthouse in Markham.
