BELLEVILLE — Firefighters were able to quickly contain and extinguish a fire at the Serenity Funeral Chapel at 3416 W. Main St. Saturday.
The small fire started in an interior room on the first floor of the building near a chair where a lamp and space heater were plugged in.
No injuries were reported in the 5:20 p.m. fire.
"We determined it was confined to that one area," said Belleville Assistant Fire Chief J.P. Penet. "We don't have an actual cause on what started the fire, that is under investigation at this point."
The funeral chapel sustained moderate smoke damage on the first floor and a small amount on the second floor, Penet added.
"Had the fire had five more minutes, we would have had fire on the second floor," Penet said. "As I told my firefighters, it was a good stop."
