Milwaukee gets bitten by the injury bug

Posted by Scott Wuerz on February 19, 2013

The Cardinals may have lost Lance Berkman, Kyle Lohse and potentially Chris Carpenter for the 2012 season.

But the Brewers aren't having much better luck.

Coming off an 83-79 third-place finish in the National League Central, the Brewers got a dose of bad news this week for 2013:

First baseman Mat Gamel, who missed the vast majority of the 2012 campaign with a knee injury, has had a setback and is now expected to miss all of the upcoming season with the same problem.

To make matters worse, the Brewers' other first base option is Corey Hart. And he's expected to miss the first part of the 2013 season with a knee problem of his own.

Milwaukee is trying to replenish its farm system. So there is little chance that the Brewers would be able to make a deal for a major league first baseman. They're likely going to have to make do with a short term solution until Hart can get back in business.
