A 69-year-old O'Fallon man has been charged by Murfreesboro, Tenn., police with multiple felony counts of sexual misconduct with a 9-year-old female relative.
According to a Murfreesboro police report, Larry G. Carter of 13 Joshua Drive was taken into custody Feb. 18 in O'Fallon by the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department.
Carter was indicted by the Rutherford County, Tenn., February grand jury.
O'Fallon Detective William Barlock had picked up Carter and held him until Rutherford County deputies arrived. Carter was then transported back to Murfreesboro to be booked under two counts of class A felony child rape, two counts of class D felony sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of class C felony incest.
Carter was released from the Rutherford County jail shortly after posting a $150,000 cash bond.
O'Fallon Capt. Jeff Wild said O'Fallon police became involved after receiving a call from the Tennessee Department of Children Services on Nov. 8.
"It was reported to us that a little girl was potentially abused by her (relative) at his O'Fallon residence where the alleged offense took place," Wild said.
O'Fallon police officers followed up on the report. Carter was picked up and interviewed on Dec. 27. Wild said he suspects Tennessee officials probably have more evidence at this time, which may explain why Carter was handed over to Rutherford County Sheriff's office officials.
The O'Fallon Police Department's investigation is waiting a response from the St. Clair County State's Attorney's office on whether warrants will be issued.
