A day after he was held out of the St. Louis Cardinals Grapefruit League opening game, first baseman Allen Craig made his debut and had a hit with an RBI in two at-bats.
The Redbirds lost their second consecutive game, this time by a score of 5-3 to the Boston Red Sox.
Also figuring in on the St. Louis scoring were Daniel Descalso, who hit a home run to continue the power streak he showed in late 2012, and outfielder Adron Chambers, who hit a sacrifice fly.
Top prospect Oscar Taveras hit a double in four at-bats and Matt Carpenter was 2-for-4 while splitting his time between second base and third.
On the mound, Edward Mujica and Fernando Salas each put in a perfect inning of relief. John Gast started the game for St. Louis and took the loss. He gave up two runs on four hits with two strike outs and a walk.
