Trial to begin for Cahokia man accused in Steak 'n Shake killings

Published: February 25, 2013

The trial is expected to begin Monday for a Cahokia man accused of killing two employees of a south St. Louis County Steak 'n Shake restaurant .

Oundre Akins, 23, is accused of killing Tammy Cantrell, 44, and Mark Gerstner, 24, in November 2008 during a robbery conducted with his brother, Anthony.

Oundre Akins is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, robbery, and armed criminal action. He waived his right to a jury trial earlier this month in exchange for prosecutors' agreement not to pursue the death penalty. Instead, they're seeking a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Anthony Akins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in June 2011 and will be sentenced later this year.

Both of the Akins brothers previously worked at the restaurant where the murders and robbery occurred.
