A Collinsville man has been sentenced to two years probation for possession of child pornography.
Sean Roberts, 23, of 119 St. Louis Road, No. 5, accepted a plea agreement from the Madison County State's Attorney's Office. Roberts' pleaded guilty to a class 3 felony charge of possessing a video of a female he knew to be under the age of 18 engaged in sexual acts with herself. He was sentenced Feb. 4.
In addition to probation, Roberts was required to seek treatment and register as a sex offender. Stephanee Smith, spokeswoman for the Madison County State's Attorney Office, said Roberts has complied with the order to register as a sex offender.
Roberts also was forced to surrender an iPhone that was seized as evidence in the case and is required to pay fees and court cost of $1,756.
Roberts was arrested on Dec. 9, 2010. Madison County Assistant State's Attorney Neil Schroder said Edwardsville Police Detective Mike Lybarger discovered that Roberts was receiving known child pornography files using peer-to-peer file sharing software.
A search warrant was issued and Roberts was arrested by the Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force and the Edwardsville Police Department.
Roberts was a senior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the time of his arrest. A representative from SIUE could not be reached for comment about Roberts' status with the university.
As part of the plea deal, the State's Attorney's Office dropped two other felony charges against Roberts. Those charges were for possession of a video of a female under 18 engaged in sex acts with an adult male.
