East St. Louis man found dead in Washington Park basement

Published: March 1, 2013

— Police have released the name of the man whose body was found in the basement of a home Friday morning.

Roth Brewer, 50, of the Roosevelt Homes in East St. Louis, was found in the home, according to Illinois State Police Capt. Jim Morrisey.

No signs of trauma were found on Brewer and the cause of death has not been determined, Morrisey said.

Brewer did suffer health problems but it is not known whether these issues contributed to his death.

"Police are still interviewing people to determine what lead up to the death of Mr. Brewer," Morrisey said.

Brewer did not live at the residence at 1611 N. 48th St. but was familiar with it, police said. The body was discovered about 10 a.m. Friday in the basement and had been there at least 12 hours. An anonymous caller alerted police about the body.

Washington Park Police Chief David Clark said neighbors were familiar with the man and said he frequented Washington Park.

Clark said state police were asked to lead the investigation.
