Hannah Abraham, 10, of Edwardsville, finishes construction of her rubber band car at the "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day 2013" event at SIUE on Saturday. She and other girls made the cars as part of a mechanical engineering experiment. Old compact discs were used as wheels, a wooden skewer served as an axle, and a piece of cardboard was the chassis. The SIUE Section of the Society of Women Engineers sponsored the event to encourage girls to pursue engineering careers. Over 100 girls from the metro-east rotated between classrooms in the Engineering Building to perform experiments in the fields of chemical, mechanical, structural, electrical, and civil engineering.
