People and families who need a new passport will be able to learn more about the process and file and application during a special event Saturday.
Passport Day in the USA 2013 will be held at local post offices so parents don't have to miss work to apply for a child's U.S. passport.
"Many customers find it more convenient to visit the post office on Saturday and most of the offices offering Saturday hours have extra staffing to accommodate the extra passport applicants," said Loretta Tolliver, U.S. Postal Service Marketing Manager.
Passports for children under the age of 16 expire every five years and to apply for a passport for a child under 16, both parents and the child must appear in person or bring a notarized "Minor Consent" form signed by the absent parent. Applicants must provide a Application for Passport Form DS-11. The form can be downloaded from the USPS website at www.usps.com/passport. The form is also available at the post office.
For more information about cost and documents needed to apply for a passport, visit www.usps.com/passport. Department of State Regional Passport Agencies and Centers will not be open for service Saturday.
Those who cannot participate in the Saturday event can follow a live twitter question and answer session @TravelGov at 9 a.m. To ask a question, Tweet @TravelGov using #AskState. The conversation can be followed through the week by using the hashtag, #PPTDay or by visiting the TravelGov Facebook page beginning March 4 for daily passport tips and referrals to other online resources.
