Baseball

McKendree opens its season Tuesday

LEBANON -- The McKendree Bearcats are set to open the 2013 baseball season Tuesday with a nine-inning game in St. Louis against Harris-Stowe State University.

First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

The Bearcats' home opener is slated for 1 p.m. Wednesday versus always tough Culver-Stockton College.

Mother Nature delayed the 2013 season opener for the McKendree University baseball team once again.

The Bearcats' three-game series at Quincy University, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, was postponed due to weather and wet field conditions. Make-up dates for the contests have yet to be announced.

It was the second time in three days that McKendree has seen its season opener pushed back due to weather. The Bearcats were slated to begin their season last Wednesday at Missouri Baptist University, but that contest was cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

With the latest adjustments in the schedule, McKendree is now set to open its 2013 season on Tuesday, March 5 with a nine-inning game in St. Louis against Harris-Stowe State University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The Bearcats' home opener is slated for 1 p.m. on the following day - March 6 - versus Culver-Stockton College.

Softball

Bearcats home opener moved to Thursday

LEBANON -- The McKendree University softball team's home opening doubleheader originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been pushed back to Thursday.

The game has been been pushed back one day due to the pending wet weather forecast combined with current wet conditions on the field. The doubleheader against the Prairie Stars will begin with game one at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Men's golf

Bearcats tied for 15th in tournament

LEBANON -- The McKendree University men's golf team sits in a tie for 15th place following first-round action Monday at the Las Vegas Desert Classic. The two-day tournament is being staged at the Revere Golf Club near Las Vegas.

Through the first 18 holes, McKendree posted a team score of 345 and is tied with Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Bellarmine University. Midwestern State University holds down the top spot through the first round at 310, which is five strokes in front of the University of West Florida.

The teams were originally scheduled to play 36 holes on Sunday, but day one action was shortened to just 18 holes due to weather conditions. The final round of the Las Vegas Desert Classic - which is being hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis -- will take place Tuesday.

Women's tennis

Bearcats do well at Principia Invitational

ELSAH -- The McKendree University women's tennis team had three individuals and one doubles team post unbeaten records at the Principia College Invitational on March 1-2.

The Bearcats will travel to Springfield,on March 15-16 to compete at the Hack Kellner Invitational hosted by University of Illinois at Springfield.

At No. 1 singles, senior Adriana Gonzalez finished the two day event with a 3-0 record. She defeated Maggie Schutte of Truman State University, 6-0,6-1, Elise Beckemeier of Missouri Baptist University, 6-0, 6-1, and Carlie Sanderude of Principia, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Guiliana Gonzalez also posted a perfect 3-0 record. She defeated Kim Birenbaum of Truman State, 6-1, 6-3, Hannah Wadlow of Missouri Baptist, 6-0, 6-1, and Sarah Corbitt of Principia, 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Kelcie Comley (Belleville West) also went an unblemished 3-0 at No. 3 singles. She defeated Jesica Gennuso of Truman State, 6-1, 6-2, Nicole Zevlever of Missouri Baptist, 6-0, 6-1, and Kelly Adams of Principia, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).

The doubles team of A. Gonzalez and G. Gonzalez also went undefeated at No. 1 doubles with a 3-0 record.

Men's tennis

McKendree beats Illinois-Springfield

BELLEVILLE -- The McKendree University men's tennis team won its second-straight match on Friday in a 8-1 win over University of Illinois-Springfield.

Picking up singles wins were Gabor Toth, Luciano Misitrano, Barnabas Toth, Mortiz Kandt, Fabio Tsuchiya, and Feylin Janssen. Picking up doubles wins were the duos of Tsuchiya/Toth at No. 2 doubles and thte team of Kandt/Janssen at No. 3 doubles.

The Bearcats improved to 3-1 overall with the win, and will travel to Springfield, on March 15-16 to compete in the Hack Kellner Invitational in Springfield.

Women's lacrosse

Bearcats set for five games in eight days

LEBANON -- The McKendree University women's lacrosse team will travel to the state of Colorado to play five conference games over an eight-day stretch.

McKendree will play Lake Erie College on Friday in Grand Junction, Co., at 5 p.m. CST.

The Bearcats suffered their first loss on Saturday to visiting Indiana Institute of Technology 17-6. The Bearcats fell to 1-1 overall.

Freshman goalie Kelly Eastman (O'Fallon) had 11 saves in the loss.

Basketball

Lynx raise money for Megan Webb

BELLEVILLE -- The Lindenwood University-Belleville men's basketball team teamed up with LU-Belleville students, staff, fans and the local community in supporting the fundraising efforts of Belleville West High School student Megan Webb.

It happened in the final home game for the Lynx, who defeated Morthland College in Lynx Arena to end the regular-season at a program-best 26-4. I

Special guests for the evening included local area high school students for Belleville Township High School East and West and the members of the Optimist Club of Greater Belleville. Proceeds from the evening's event were donated to the Webb family of Belleville. The family's daughter Megan, a young Belleville Township High School West student and star volleyball player, was recently critically injured in a car accident. Megan is still recovering the incident. The accident tragically took the life Megan's close friend, Stephen Zehner, a senior at Belleville Township High School West.

During the Senior Night basketball event, various raffle baskets items, provided by Lindenwood University and PNC Bank of Fairview Heights, were raffled off and the proceeds presented to Megan's sister, Marlee. BTHS volleyball Coach Austin Betz, was also on hand to show his support for his student-athlete.

During half-time, Athletic Director Scott Spinner, shared his heartfelt sentiments to the crowd regarding the importance of community involvement and our duty to embrace those in needs as a community. Coach Spinner donated the proceeds from the game, including entry fees and concessions stand revenue as well.

In all total, LU-Belleville helped to raise almost $500 for Webb's recovery in showing our support as Belleville's hometown university.
